Using The Turabian Format In Your Essay: Things To Remember

If you are taking a class in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences field, you may be asked to write your paper using the Turabian formatting style. It is a style that is used by many students when they are unsure what style they should use. There are some specific things to remember when writing your paper in this style.

  1. It consists of three parts:
    • front matter consisting of title page, copyright page, dedication, table of contents, list of tables or illustrations, acknowledgements, abstract, and others like it.
    • Text or main part of your paper
    • Reference matter or back matter including the endnotes, bibliography, and appendixes
  2. The text section should be double-spaced. The indented block quotes, bibliographies, itemized lists, and footnotes should be single-spaced.
  3. All of the pages will be counted even if they do not show a number on them. The front matter should have numbered with lower case roman numerals on the bottom of each page in the center.
  4. There is a specific citation system for your references. The references will be formatted differently if you are using them in a footnote section, the bibliography, as a parenthetical reference, or on the reference list.

One of the first things that you will need to do is choose a really good topic to write your paper on. The topic should be interesting and relevant. It is a very important to make sure that you work to present a solid thesis statement about your topic and then work to prove it through your paper. You should create an outline that lines up with the main formatting style of a five paragraph essay with the introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.

The introduction should give background information on the topic that you are writing about. It should introduce your topic as well. It will present the main idea that your paper is based on which is the thesis statement as well. The body of the paper will consist of your evidence. You should come up with three supporting facts to prove your thesis that are each presented in their own paragraph. The last paragraph will be the conclusion. This is the paragraph that will wrap it all up and focus on restating your main ideas to reinforce the main ideas in the paper.
